Bamboo bed sheets are best known for their natural temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties. They also have a silky-smooth feel and lightweight construction, making them perfect for hot sleepers

But first, some clarification: Bamboo sheets are not actually made from raw bamboo. In reality, they're made of rayon, lyocell, or viscose fabric derived from bamboo fibers. So, don't panic if you see those words on your product tag and think you've been tricked into buying polyester sheets.

"In reality, you can't call them bamboo sheets—people are actually getting fined by the FTC," says Jeffrey Kambak, CEO of Yunus Textile Mills Limited. "You have to either use 'rayon from bamboo' or 'viscose from bamboo' in the labeling." For simplicity's sake, we're going to use the term "bamboo sheets" throughout this article.

To find the best bamboo sheets, we tested 38 sets in our Des Moines lab and real-world conditions for over six months, evaluating them on quality, texture, breathability, durability, and value. For expert advice on what to look for when shopping for bamboo sheets, we spoke with Kambak and Stephen Light, CEO and co-owner of Nolah Technologies (a bedding manufacturer).

What Stands Out
  • They feature deep pockets with elastic corners and are less prone to wrinkling than other bamboo sheets.

What Could Be Improved
  • They are not available in split king size.

Bamboo sheets tend to be more expensive than cotton, which is why we were thrilled to find a set of high-quality bamboo bed sheets at such a great value. In our testing, we found the Bampure Bamboo Bed Sheets to be soft, silky, and cool to the touch. The smooth sateen weave gives them a lovely sheen and high-end appearance, and the thread count is 400, which falls right in the optimal range for bamboo viscose.

Another positive is that the sheets seem less prone to wrinkling than many of the others we tested. Plus, we particularly appreciate that these sheets have a deep pocket and an elastic corner band to keep them in place. After over six months of use, these sheets proved to be just as silky and lightweight as they were when we opened them, with an airy feel that’s perfect for hot weather or hot sleepers alike.

These sheets are certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, meaning they’ve been tested for harmful substances. They are available in several colors ranging from neutrals to jewel tones, so you’re bound to find a set that matches your existing bedding.

What Stands Out
  • They are available in 13 colors and 7 sizes, including some unusual options like split-king.

What Could Be Improved
  • They’re made from a polyester-bamboo blend, so aren’t 100% bamboo.

Bamboo sheets can get expensive, so one way to save is to look for sheets that are made with a bamboo blend instead of 100% bamboo. If you’re okay with a blend, we heartily recommend the Cosy House Collection Bamboo Sheets, which are 60% polyester and 40% rayon derived from bamboo.

Aside from offering great value, these sheets feel soft, sturdy, and cool to the touch. We found the fabric to be thin and breathable without feeling cheap, keeping us cool throughout the night. They have held up well after six months of use, with no discoloration, tears, or changes in texture. In fact, they’ve even become softer with every wash. We were also impressed to find that they maintained their cool feel throughout the testing period, despite being made with polyester.

Available in 13 colors, these sheets are perfect for any personal preferences. They’re very lightweight, so they may be a bit too thin for those who prefer a denser weave, but we think they’re ideal for summer use. They also fit pretty snugly on our bed, so they may pose challenges for those with thicker mattresses. Still, we think their high quality and durability given their price make them a steal.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets combine the breathability of linen with the softness of bamboo.

What Could Be Improved
  • The water took a long time to absorb, so these sheets aren’t as moisture-wicking as others on our list.

Blending bamboo with other fabrics can often compromise its cooling ability and softness, but the Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet Set is an exception. The blend of 30% linen and 70% rayon from bamboo combines the best of both of these fabrics. Linen is renowned for its temperature-regulating capabilities, meaning it keeps you cool in the warmer months and warm in the cooler months.

Combining linen with bamboo helps to offset the texture of linen, leaving you with a softer and more durable sheet set. Plus, it makes these sheets feel extraordinarily lightweight and cool to the touch. The texture feels more soft than smooth, and we would go as far as to say these are some of the softest sheets we’ve ever tried. The fitted sheet fits on the mattress perfectly, with no loose threads or snags whatsoever. We were impressed to find that they stayed securely on the bed, no matter how much we tossed and turned.

The sheets performed fairly well in our stain test—the coffee stain came out almost entirely, but the foundation stain remained 50% visible. On the downside, the water droplet in our absorption test remained intact on the sheets for 12 seconds and took nearly 20 seconds to spread and absorb into the sheets, making us question the moisture management. But after a few months of use in our own homes, we had no issues with overheating, and found that these sheets kept us comfortable in warm and cold temperatures alike.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets are extremely soft, breathable, and wrinkle-resistant. They also come with extra-deep pockets to accommodate all mattress sizes.

What Could Be Improved
  • They developed a few loose threads with regular washing.

Cozy Earth’s internet-famous bed sheets gave an impressive performance during our testing. We were immediately struck by the soft and smooth feel of these sheets, and the embroidered logo makes them seem very high-end.

These bamboo sheets had an immediate cooling sensation, and we never felt overheated while sleeping on them. After we washed them, they were extremely soft and free of wrinkles—a huge advantage over other bamboo sheet sets. We slept in these sheets for six months straight because we couldn’t get enough of their super-soft, hotel-quality feel. With regular washing every two weeks we noticed a few loose threads, but considering we used them nightly, this level of wear is minimal.

The 320 thread count is within the ideal range for bamboo sheets, and the 20-inch pockets are deep enough to fit almost any mattress. The sheet set is available in six different sizes and 16 different earth-tone colors. These are the most expensive bamboo sheets we tested, but if you can swing it with your budget, we feel confident this set will give you a comfortable night’s sleep for many years to come. Plus, it comes with an impressive 100-day trial and 10-year warranty.

What Stands Out
  • Because these sheets are made of bamboo and cotton, they're more lightweight and breathable than other blends.

What Could Be Improved
  • They’re not silky smooth like other bamboo sheets.

Many bamboo-blend sheets combine bamboo with polyester, but these Brooklyn Bedding Bamboo Cotton Sheets take a different approach. Made of bamboo rayon and cotton, these sheets feel sturdy and substantial, yet they’re still breathable and moisture-wicking.

Like bamboo, cotton is lightweight and breathable, so these sheets feel cool to the touch—although they aren’t as silky as 100% bamboo sheets. After six months of use, we think that they’re cooling and comfortable to sleep on, and they look the same as they did when we first started using them. They didn’t thin, fray, or dramatically shrink. And while they did emerge from the laundry looking wrinkly, they felt even softer and silkier than they did before.

Because 300-thread-count cotton is pricier than polyester, these sheets aren’t as cheap as other bamboo-blend options. They’re still a good value though, and we also like that they come in a bunch of sizes, including hard-to-find options like twin XL and split king. And thanks to their deep elastic pockets, making the bed is a breeze—even if you have a thick mattress.

What Stands Out
  • These silky smooth sheets are suitable for cooler and warmer months.

What Could Be Improved
  • They lose some of their silkiness after washing.

Night sweats are no fun, and finding a breathable sheet set is the key to ensuring a cool sleep. These sheets from The Company Store are made with 70% rayon from bamboo and 30% combed cotton, combining the breathability and moisture-wicking properties of bamboo with the durability and feel of cotton. In fact, we found these sheets so luxurious that they reminded us of those you would find at an upscale hotel.

In our testing, the sheets had a cooling sensation that lasted through the night. Thanks to the smooth sateen weave and deep pockets, we found the fitted sheet very easy to slip on and off the mattress, providing a hassle-free bed-making process. These breathable sheets lost some of their silkiness after our initial wash test, which made them feel closer to all-cotton sheets. Despite this initial drawback, the sheets maintained a silky feel after six months of use, showing no signs of wear and tear.

Considering their impressive breathability, we were surprised to find that these sheets worked perfectly at any temperature. They quickly became our favorite sheets for warmer months and even replaced our favorite fleece sheets in colder seasons. We also like that the sheets come in several colors, and they can even be monogrammed for a thoughtful gift that will give the recipient years of use.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets have impressive temperature-regulating properties.

What Could Be Improved
  • Stains are difficult to remove.

As temperatures fluctuate throughout the year, it’s important to find a sheet set that can comfortably withstand all seasons. After all, no one wants to replace their sheets every few months. That’s why we love the DreamFit DreamChill Enhanced Bamboo Sheet Set.

We found these sheets to be medium in weight, feeling less crisp than pure cotton and less silky than pure bamboo. The bamboo and cotton blend felt smooth on our skin, and became even softer after washing. Where these sheets really stood out, though, was in their notable temperature-regulating properties. They kept us comfortable without feeling stifling, so we think this pick is perfect for any season.

However, these sheets fell short in the stain test. The coffee, foundation, and oil stains were all still visible after washing, so we wouldn’t recommend these for mess-prone households. Even so, we were impressed by their durability. We noticed no lint or loose fibers after the abrasion test, and the texture remained the same. Another good feature is that each corner features a rubberized strap to grip the bottom of the mattress. These straps were a bit difficult to get on, but once they were secured, the fitted sheet didn’t budge at all.

What Stands Out
  • They’re highly moisture-wicking.

What Could Be Improved
  • They’re only available in queen and king sizes.

Bamboo sheets are known for being very lightweight, but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. If you like sheets with a little more heft to them, we heartily recommend these Bamboo Bliss Bamboo Sateen Sheets.

The sheets are made of bamboo rayon and spun with a sateen weave, so they feel silky smooth. But thanks to their 400 thread count, they’re denser and heavier than other bamboo sheets we’ve tested. (We’d classify them as mid-weight, rather than lightweight.) Still, the sheets are as cooling and moisture-wicking as you’d expect bamboo bedding to be.

These sheets also impressed us with their durability. When we first unboxed them, they didn’t seem that sturdy, but they held up well in the wash, and most stains came out with ease. After six months of use, they have proven to be durable, cooling, and more resistant to odors compared to other sheet sets. Given their silky feel and durability, we think they’re on offer at an amazing price. And while we’re disappointed that they come in just two sizes, we appreciate that they’re available in a range of pretty shades.

What Stands Out
  • These sheets held up the best after our sandpaper abrasion test.

What Could Be Improved
  • They absorbed moisture more slowly and wrinkled more than alternatives.

Bamboo sheets tend to be soft, lightweight, and breathable, which sometimes comes at the cost of durability. But Bamboo Bay’s Bamboo Sheets don’t force you to choose between the two.

Made of sateen-weave bamboo viscose, the sheets feel incredibly soft and lightweight. They have a silky, almost slippery feel to them which may take some getting used to. And during our tests, they proved remarkably durable. We subjected the sheets to coffee, oil, and foundation, and every stain came out in the wash. When we rubbed the sheets with sandpaper, they actually got smoother, though they did thin a little. These results were rare: Most of the sheets we tested showed remnants of stains and pilled when exposed to sandpaper.

The sheets also kept us cool, although they didn’t perform as well in our moisture-wicking test. We were also disappointed by how wrinkly they became after laundering. But given their impressive performance in our durability tests, this felt like a minor downside (especially since they proved to be cooling throughout six months of testing). And we appreciate that the sheets come in a range of colors and sizes, making it easy to find a set worth buying.

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the Bampure Bamboo Bed Sheet Set because it proved to be soft, cooling, wrinkle-resistant, and durable in our testing—not to mention a great value. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, we recommend the Cosy House Collection Luxury Bamboo Sheet Set, which is made from a polyester-bamboo blend that’s still lightweight and breathable.

Our Testing Process

We tested 38 bamboo sheets in our lab and at home, evaluating each sheet set before and after washing.

We first assessed the quality of each sheet by visually inspecting it for loose or uneven threads, imperfections in the dye or pattern, and any other flaws. During this inspection, we used a tape measure to measure the dimensions of each sheet and compared them to the specifications provided by the manufacturer.

Next, we tested each sheet set by making a bed, using the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases, and taking note of the texture as we worked. We then put a droplet of water on the fabric, analyzing whether the water beaded or dispersed into the material. The quicker the water disperses, the better moisture management the material has. To account for the density and weave, we also held each sheet up to a light and recorded whether we could see any light passing through and to what degree.

Then we washed and dried each sheet set according to the manufacturer’s instructions. After laundering, we recorded the measurements again to see if the sheets shrank or stretched. Finally, we remade the bed and took note of any signs of wear or damage on the sheets to assess their durability. We also used a sanding block to abrade the material, observing any tears and collecting any fibers that came off of the fabric.

Finally, we applied oil, coffee, and foundation to the sheets and pillowcases, letting each dry for an hour. After washing and drying the sheets, we noted how visible the stain was, using this information to evaluate ease of cleaning

Once testing was complete, we reviewed the price of each sheet set and scored its overall value, considering its performance, materials, and price. For long-term insights, we took the sheets home and evaluated their real-world performance after three and six months of use, updating this article accordingly.

How to Shop for Bamboo Sheets Like a Pro

Pay Attention to Material and Weave

Most bamboo sheets are actually made of either viscose or rayon from bamboo. Most bamboo sheets start as pulp, which is then dissolved in a chemical solution and forced through a machine to create filaments (or regenerated cellulose) that is then spun into a fabric. The result is a soft, lightweight, and breathable fabric that feels like silk.

There’s also lyocell made from bamboo, which is produced by dissolving raw bamboo in a solvent. It is considered more eco-friendly than viscose because 99% of the water and solvent are reused and recycled during the treatment process. Like viscose and rayon, bamboo lyocell is soft, moisture-wicking, and cooling. But it may not be as soft and sturdy as viscose and rayon, and it’s often more expensive.

You’ll also see bamboo blended with other materials, like cotton, linen, or polyester. This is a good option for people who don’t love the silky feel of bamboo but do like the breathability.  Blending with cotton or linen can make the fabric softer, while blending it with polyester can make it stronger and more affordable. “If the description doesn't say 100% viscose, rayon, or lyocell, it's likely a bamboo blend or another material altogether,” says Light.

When it comes to weave, bamboo sheets are most commonly found with twill or sateen weaves, but your choice will largely come down to personal preference. Sateen uses a one-thread-under and three-or-four-threads-over pattern, which gives it an ultra-soft feel and a slight sheen. Twill weaves make a sturdier fabric, but it’s also less breathable than sateen. Bamboo percale sheets are the most breathable, but they’re harder to find.

Know Your Mattress Height

Pocket depth refers to the maximum mattress height a fitted sheet can accommodate. To determine the pocket depth necessary for your mattress, measure it from top to bottom—and don't forget to include your mattress topper in your measurement.

While a 12-inch pocket depth will technically fit a 12-inch mattress height, you want to give yourself a little wiggle room so your sheets don't end up sliding up the corners of your mattress. As a rule of thumb, subtract two inches from the pocket depth of your fitted sheet to determine if it will fit your mattress comfortably. For example, a pocket depth of 16 inches will comfortably fit a mattress that's 14 inches tall or less. During testing, we found that Cozy Earth's bamboo sheet set would be best for extra-thick mattresses because it has an impressive 20-inch pocket.

Thread Count Isn’t Everything

Our experts agree that a higher thread count is not necessarily better: "We've done a horrible job educating consumers that the quality of sheets is tied to thread count, and it's absolutely not," says Kambak. "It's much more about the quality of the yarn and how good the company is at finishing the textiles." A higher thread count actually makes the fabric denser, which can restrict the airflow of your sheets.

For bamboo sheets, Kambak suggests looking for a thread count between 200 and 400. Anything higher than 1,000 usually indicates lower quality because manufacturers can use thinner fibers to cram in as many threads as possible. “Bamboo fibers are naturally soft, smooth, and durable, so a higher thread count isn't necessary,” Light adds.

Keep an Eye Out for Product Certifications

Independent third-party tests ensure that textiles, such as bedding, meet specific standards for product safety. Because most bamboo sheets undergo a chemical treatment process, there can be a residual of these harmful substances on the textile's surface. The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certification ensures that products have been tested and proven safe from harmful substances—most of the sheets on our list have received this certification.

It’s important to be wary of any brand that calls their bamboo sheets “organic.” The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the certification body for organic products, and they do not consider any bamboo bedding to be organic. That’s because of the regeneration process that bamboo goes through to create viscose/rayon/lyocell, which means that bamboo bedding cannot technically be considered natural or organic even if the bamboo plant was originally certified as organic in the field.

More Bamboo Sheets to Consider

Quince Bamboo Sheet Set: The only reason these sheets didn’t receive five stars right out of the box is because we noticed they had a funny smell and uneven stitching. But given the great price, we think these minor issues could be overlooked.

Hush Iced Cooling Sheet Set: These sheets felt cool and silky smooth to the touch, and they remained so after washing and drying. While we thought the quality was good, we didn’t like that 95% of the stains we applied could not be removed, especially considering the higher price.

Questions You Might Ask

Are bamboo sheets better than cotton?

It depends on your preferences. Bamboo sheets are extremely effective at drawing heat away from the body and wicking away moisture. Cotton is generally crisper, while bamboo has more of a silky finish.

However, cotton tends to be more affordable than bamboo, unless you're splurging on premium cottons such as Egyptian or Supima. In our testing, The Company Store Cotton Bamboo Sateen Sheet Set's blend of bamboo viscose and cotton made it feel less silk-like, making it better suited for those who prefer the feel of traditional cotton sheets.

Are bamboo sheets eco-friendly?

Although bamboo viscose and bamboo rayon sheets are often marketed as "green" or "eco-friendly,” this topic is hotly debated. Kambak says that from a plant perspective, bamboo is eco-friendly because it doesn't require much irrigation or chemicals and grows back quickly—almost like a weed. "However, chemicals are used in the process of creating cellulose from bamboo," he says.

Bamboo lyocell uses a more sustainable treatment process than viscose and rayon, but it's more expensive and harder to come by. And when not properly sourced, bamboo-derived textiles can contribute to deforestation. Always look for bamboo sheets that are transparent about their production and sourcing processes.

How do you wash bamboo sheets?

Always default to the specific manufacturer's care instructions before washing your sheets. Generally, bamboo sheets can be washed in cold water with mild detergent and tumble-dried on low heat. Avoid washing them with towels if you don't want linty sheets. Since bamboo sheets are soft right out of the package, fabric softener is not necessary. In fact, Light recommends avoiding it: “To protect your bamboo bedding, you should never bleach bamboo bedding or add fabric softeners,” he says.
