Cooling blankets help regulate your body temperature throughout the night, keeping you cool and comfortable as you sleep. Some of these blankets are made with naturally temperature-regulating materials that promote airflow, like bamboo and linen, while others utilize cooling technology that actively absorbs heat.

To find the best cooling blankets, we tested 115 blankets of all kinds in our Des Moines lab and at home, considering their quality, comfort, durability, temperature regulation, and value. We also consulted Angie Hurst, director of product development for bedding, bath, and decor at Earthbound.

What Stands Out
  • It’s lightweight enough for hot sleepers but substantial enough that you won’t wake up freezing.

What Could Be Improved
  • It attracts lint in the dryer and takes two hours to fully dry.

Earning perfect scores for its quality and comfort, the Luxome Lightweight Blanket reigns as the overall best cooling blanket we've tested. Crafted from bamboo viscose, a naturally temperature-regulating material, this blanket has a luxurious feel and appearance. The corded edges exude a sense of elegance, and the blanket itself drapes nicely. It’s available in six rich colors, making it ideal to display on the couch or edge of the bed.

While many cooling blankets lack heft, we found that this blanket struck the perfect balance of weight—lightweight enough for summer use, but substantial enough to hug you. It kept us cool enough to fall asleep, but warm enough that we didn’t wake up shivering. Considering its ideal weight, we feel that this blanket is suitable for year-round use.

We were also impressed by how soft this blanket felt upon our first use, and it became even softer with every wash (yes, it’s machine washable). The drying process proved to be a bit more tedious, though, as the blanket took over two hours to fully dry. We also noticed that it picked up fuzz and lint from the dryer. Aside from this inconvenience, this blanket has held up perfectly throughout six months of use—no stains, fading, or tears. After incorporating this blanket into our nightly routine, there’s no turning back.

Dangtop Bamboo Cooling Blanket

What Stands Out
  • It's very thin and cool to the touch.

What Could Be Improved
  • It isn’t a great decorative throw.

If you're looking for a blanket that's cooling but budget friendly, this one from Dangtop is a great choice. As soon as we tried this blanket, we were amazed by how cool to the touch it felt. It's slightly textured but still feels super soft and breathable, making it the perfect layer to add to your bedspread. Some of us actually found the blanket a tad too thin, comparing it to a top sheet. However, for hot sleepers, we think the lightweight design does just the trick.

When it comes to care, this blanket can be washed by hand or on a gentle cycle in the washer—but take note that the brand advises against putting it in the dryer because it could shrink. Still, we noticed no changes in appearance after six months of use.

This blanket is available in 11 colors and four sizes, making it one of the most versatile picks on our list. Given its thin, minimalist design, this blanket doesn’t look very nice when folded, so it's not a good option if you want something decorative. Still, it provides a great layer for lounging. And for such a reasonable price, this blanket is a true steal.

Material: Rayon from bamboo | Sizes: 59 by 79 inches, 79 by 91 inches, 90 by 90 inches, 108 by 90 inches | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Hand wash or machine wash gentle; air dry

What Stands Out
  • Despite the thin, lightweight material, this blanket is very well-made.

What Could Be Improved
  • It isn’t the most durable pick.

When you’re seeking a lightweight, barely-there blanket, the Quince Organic Airy Gauze Blanket is the perfect companion. In our testing, this blanket stood out for its gorgeous appearance. It has mitered corners rather than rolled hems, and has a gauzey appearance that looks great whether it's folded on a bed or couch. We found this blanket soft, lightweight, and breathable, thanks to its airy texture.

On the downside though, this blanket developed a more worn look after laundering, though we didn’t mind—it looked more like a vintage heirloom rather than an abused blanket. Other than a couple of snags, the blanket maintained its quality throughout six months of use.

Overall, we think this blanket is ideal for nights when you’re too warm under your classic comforter but too cool with nothing at all. It’s great to use as a standalone blanket in the summer or to layer in the colder months. Plus, it comes in seven colors, making it a nice accent piece for your bed or sofa.

Material: Cotton | Sizes: Full/queen, king/California king | Return Policy: 365 days | Care: Machine wash cool, tumble dry low

What Stands Out
  • It's designed to be layered on a bed.

What Could Be Improved
  • While the material is breathable, the feel is a bit heavy.

Bamboo is renowned for its breathability, and Cozy Earth’s temperature-regulating Bamboo Blanket did not disappoint. This is one of the heavier blankets on our list, so we were reluctant to believe it would be temperature regulating. Despite its cozy heft, we found this blanket surprisingly cool. The luxurious material is incredibly soft and cozy, so we think this is the perfect blanket to snuggle up with.

Upon arrival, we noticed no snags, tears, or loose threads, and we appreciated the blanket’s satin edges, a testament to its well-made construction. This blanket is machine washable, so it’s easy to maintain. While the manufacturer says you can dry it normally, it may be a bit too heavy when wet for a standard dryer, so the laundromat might be your best bet. It covered our queen bed adequately on all sides, draping beautifully. This blanket comes in four sizes, ranging from a baby blanket to king. It only comes in white, though, so it won’t add a pop of color to your space.

Sijo Home Eucalyptus Bed Blanket
PHOTO: Sijo Home
What Stands Out
  • The lightweight blanket excels at temperature regulation.

What Could Be Improved
  • It isn't durable enough for pet owners.

While we wouldn't call the Sijo Eucalyptus Bed Blanket "cooling," it offers unmatched temperature regulation and breathability. Crafted from a blend of Tencel lyocell and cotton, the blanket regulated our body temperature beautifully during testing, never causing us to overheat. If you do find yourself wanting to kick off the covers, the lightweight design makes it easy to do so.

The fabric is soft and lightweight, with a waffle weave that resembles to a waffle bathrobe or bath towel. Due to its thin design, we believe it would work well as a standalone blanket in the summer or an extra layer throughout the year. It earns bonus points for it's generous size, making it perfect for sleeping or cozying up during movie nights on the couch. Plus, it's eco-conscious, with certifications including Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, GOTS, and EcoCert Organic USA.

After being roughhoused by three energetic dogs, this blanket did develop several snags and loose threads, so we wouldn't recommend it for pet owners. Aside from that, we've noticed no signs of wear and tear, and it has actually become even softer post wash.

Material: 50% Tencel lyocell, 50% cotton | Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low

What Stands Out
  • It’s softer than standard gauze.

What Could Be Improved
  • It snags easily, so it isn’t ideal for pet owners.

This blanket’s light, gauzy texture is unmatched, comparable to the feel of a soft T-shirt. While the fabric itself is thin, the blanket feels fairly substantial, making it ideal for year-round use. The fabric is softer than standard gauze but just as lightweight, exuding an airy feel on our bed. We would even go as far as to say it’s some of the softest linen we’ve ever felt.

After enduring six months of use and many loads of laundry, this blanket has maintained its high quality. We noticed no snags, tears, or discoloration, and the fabric maintained the same softness post wash. It fell short during the durability test, though. After one swipe of the pet brush, the material immediately snagged and pulled, so we wouldn’t recommend this pick for pet owners.

Given its design, we think this pick is suitable as a standalone summer blanket or a layering winter one—it was somehow warm enough for colder nights but light enough for hotter ones. We also love how big and stretchy the material is—it’s so large, you could even fold it in half for extra weight.

Material: 33% linen, 67% cotton blend | Sizes: Full/queen, king/California king | Return Policy: 60 days | Care: Machine wash

What Stands Out
  • It has a high-quality appearance that's nice enough to display.

What Could Be Improved
  • The material may not be soft enough for some people.

If you’re seeking a lightweight, hotel-quality blanket to up your lounging game, look no further than the Boll & Branch Waffle Bed Blanket. Those of us who are hot sleepers found this blanket to be the perfect weight—breathable and lightweight enough to keep us from overheating, but substantial enough to feel cozy. It provides a perfect dose of coziness without the heat of a standard fleece throw blanket

Crafted from 100% cotton, this blanket boasts a luxurious, high-quality appearance. The satiny border along the edges adds to its elegance, while the consistent coloring indicates its well-made construction. Available in 10 muted hues, this blanket is the perfect addition to any space, regardless of decor. We had mixed reviews on the waffle weave’s texture, though—some of us found it soft, while others found it a bit scratchy on the skin. Still, we were pleased to find that it maintained its feel throughout the testing period.

Overall, we think this blanket is a great all-season pick—we’ve been layering it over warmer blankets in the winter and using it on its own in the summer. While it’s definitely one of the pricier picks on our list, we expect that it will last awhile. It's held up beautifully throughout six months of use, and looks the same as it did on day one. Even after laundering, we noticed no loose threads or snags, so we think this is definitely a worthy investment.

Material: Organic cotton | Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king/California king | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Machine wash cold; tumble dry on low heat

What Stands Out
  • It provides the comforting heaviness of a weighted blanket without the extra warmth.

What Could Be Improved
  • It’s heavy and bulky to fold and store.

If you’re seeking the relaxing pressure of a weighted blanket without the excess heat, we recommend the Gravity Cooling Weighted Blanket. This blanket comes in three weight options: 15, 20, and 35 pounds. We were amazed at how evenly distributed this blanket's weight is—the fill is spread so evenly, we could hardly notice its heaviness until we folded it for storage.

This blanket’s cooling properties helped us maintain a comfortable temperature, while the weight offered relaxing support. We found the lyocell shell to be soft and smooth on our skin. Plus, it stayed silent as we tossed and turned, making it a great pick for restless sleepers.

During the coffee spill test, the stain did spread throughout the fabric, so we were nervous about this blanket’s stain-resistance. However, after washing the removable cover, there were no visible remnants whatsoever. We noticed a few unraveling threads upon arrival and some minor shrinking after the first wash, but the blanket has held up well throughout six months of nightly use. We did find the insert a bit difficult to get into the cover, though we think this is part of what makes it so secure.

Material: Lyocell from eucalyptus | Sizes: 66 by 42 inches, 72 by 48 inches, and 90 by 90 inches | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Cover is machine-washable in cold water, tumble dry on low; insert is hand-wash and air-dry only

What Stands Out
  • This durable quilt gets softer over time.

What Could Be Improved
  • It doesn’t quite lay flat on the bed.

Although it’s the priciest blanket on our list, the Coyuchi Pebbled Handstitched Organic Quilt may be worth the splurge. Just by looking at it, we could tell this quilt is made with care. It features a puckered texture with visible threads, adding to its visual appeal, and the even binding ensures that you won’t have to worry about it distorting in the wash. It may not be the most modern quilt, but we appreciate its homey, more traditional appeal.

This blanket’s lightweight feel makes it effortless to fold and display on the bed. We also appreciate the speckled threading, which effectively masks minor stains. However, we took some issue with the draping. Rather than cascading gently over the sides of our mattress, the quilt had a sort of rigid drape, causing it to jut out. It also bunched up in the middle and didn’t quite lay flat on the bed.

We were impressed by its performance in the abrasion test, though. Despite brushing it with our pet brush, we noticed no snags or loose threads at all. In fact, the area we brushed actually became softer than the untouched areas, suggesting that the blanket will only get softer with wear. After six months of use, we can attest that this is true—the blanket maintained its pristine condition, with no changes in quality. While this is not necessarily a blanket we would want to cuddle up with on the couch, we think it would make the perfect replacement comforter in the summer.

Material: Organic cotton | Sizes: Full/queen, king | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Cold wash, gentle cycle; tumble dry low

What Stands Out
  • It’s durable and easy to clean.

What Could Be Improved
  • The fabric isn’t particularly soft or cozy.

Torn between a comforter and a quilt? A coverlet, like the Riley Textured Cotton Coverlet, provides a happy medium. We think this blanket is the quintessential summer pick, as the textured material won’t stick to your skin in the humidity. The middle section of this blanket is a bit heavier than the edges, adding some sturdiness to the otherwise lightweight design. Just take note that coverlets tend to be stiffer than typical blankets, so this isn't an option that feels super soft and cozy.

Throughout the testing period, this blanket proved to be impressively durable. It held up well during our stain test and scratch test, with no signs of discoloration or uneven seams. After six months of use, we’ve noticed no changes in quality. In fact, it’s actually become a bit softer over time. In terms of color variety, this blanket is one of the most versatile we’ve seen. This blanket is available in 10 colors and three sizes.

Material: Cotton | Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king | Return Policy: 60 days | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low

What Stands Out
  • The blanket is cool to the touch but substantial enough to keep you warm.

What Could Be Improved
  • The fairly small size doesn't fit a queen-sized bed.

Finding a blanket able to withstand hot summers and cold winters can be challenging. That's where the Buffy Puffer Blanket comes in. True to its name, we found this blanket reminiscent of a quilted puffer jacket—smooth, evenly filled, and cool to the touch. When sleeping in an air conditioned room, the blanket helped us maintain a comfortable temperature without getting too warm or cold. In fact, we were able to lie beneath this blanket for about an hour before we felt at all overheated. With its cool exterior and medium fill, we expect this blanket to be comfortable all year round.

In addition to its slick texture, we also commend the blanket's sustainability. Crafted from a blend of recycled polyester and Tencel lyocell, and filled with 100% recycled PET, BPA-free fill, the brand boasts that each blanket recycles around 30 plastic bottles. The fabric is also stain resistant and machine washable, so you won't have to worry about any permanent spills or damage.

Unfortunately, this blanket may not be the most durable choice on our list. We noticed a few loose threads upon arrival—which became even more prevalent after laundering—and were surprised to see light pilling after a single wash. Nevertheless, it did become softer and cozier post wash. Due to this throw blanket's rather small size, we think it's better suited for a couch or arm chair rather than a queen-sized bed. Available in five bold colors, it's sure to add a vibrant touch to your living room.

Material: Recycled polyester and Tencel lyocell | Sizes: 70 by 50 inches | Return Policy: 50 days | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low

What Stands Out
  • It's soft and cozy yet not warm.

What Could Be Improved
  • It doesn't have a luxurious appearance.

When it comes to blankets, "soft" and "warm" are often used interchangeably, posing difficulty for hot sleepers. That's why we love this cotton muslin throw from Bedsure. This blanket isn't soft in the same way as a fuzzy wool or cashmere but instead offers the coziness of a worn-in linen duvet cover. While the texture may take some getting used to, we've quickly grown to love it. It checks all the boxes of a perfect summer blanket: soft, comforting, light, and breathable.

During testing, this blanket stood out for its lightweight design and impressive breathability. It's fairly thin—about half a centimeter in depth—so it certainly isn't stifling. We like that it's large enough to wrap around our whole body, able to keep us comfortable on hot nights or add an extra layer on colder ones. In addition to promoting breathability, the lightweight design also makes it easy to wash. Since it isn't bulky, our washing machine handled it the same as it would handle a standard sheet set.

This blanket isn't the most luxurious looking, so we wouldn't necessarily drape it over our couch or chairs. We also noticed a few loose threads throughout, though they weren't super visible. Still, given that this blanket comfortably fits a queen-sized bed, we consider it a good value. Despite some initial shrinkage, we've noticed no changes in texture or signs of wear and tear over time. We think this blanket's quality is higher than the price.

Material: Cotton | Sizes: Throw XL, twin XL, queen, king | Return Policy: 30 days | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low

What Stands Out
  • It retained its texture, quality, and cooling capabilities throughout several uses.

What Could Be Improved
  • The thin design doesn't drape well over the bed, and it's only available in three neutral colors.

Many blankets endure pilling, fading, and shrinkage over time, so finding a durable option, like the Coop Sleep Goods Comphy CoolSpa Blanket, is essential. This blanket looked good as new at the end of our testing period, with no fading or shrinkage whatsoever. Plus, the fabric retained its softness pre and post wash. Given the simple design and lack of stitching, we expect this blanket to last a while.

We found the blanket to be incredibly soft and silky, maintaining a lightweight yet cushioned feel. The material nestled up well against our body, staying secure on the bed as we tossed and turned. Overall, it did a great job at keeping us cool throughout the night—even those of us who typically sweat beneath a duvet were amazed by how comfortable we felt.

The tradeoff of the blanket's lightweight, silky design is that it doesn't provide the appearance of a luxurious bed cover, so we ended up getting a second duvet for aesthetic purposes. We also wish it came in a few more colors, as we found the neutral hues to be hotel-like rather than homey.

What Stands Out
  • The blanket is thin but still high quality and durable.

What Could Be Improved
  • It may be too light for winter use.

Thin, soft, and lightweight, Coop Sleep Goods' Comphy SoftSpa Quilted Blanket makes the perfect summer layer. Although this blanket isn't lush or fluffy, we found it to be surprisingly soft. It felt cool to the touch as soon as we got into bed, and even those of us who tend to sleep hot never woke up from sweatiness. Due to its thinness, we think it may be too lightweight for winter or even for use with an air conditioner. However, for those who prefer a thin, barely there blanket, this is a solid choice.

Compared to other quilted blankets we've tried, we found this one much easier to wash, move, and maintain. It's thin without feeling flimsy, making it convenient for travel, too. Given its light design, we were pleasantly surprised by the blanket's durability. It has retained its high quality appearance throughout many washes, developing no loose threads, tears or snags. Despite frequent use, it looks and feels brand new.

It's worth noting that this blanket isn't very wide, so it may function better as a throw than a bedspread. Regardless, we think its thin design and high quality make it worth the price. Plus, its available in six classic colors, including white, navy, silver blue, and more.

Final Verdict

Overall, we recommend the Luxome Lightweight Blanket for hot sleepers looking for a cooling blanket. Versatile and effective, this blanket is made with materials that are specifically designed to regulate temperature, and it can be used as both a traditional blanket and as a comforter. If you're looking for something more affordable (and more lightweight), we think the Dangtop Cooling Blanket is a fantastic alternative.

Our Testing Process

To find the best cooling blankets, we tested over 100 options in our Des Moines lab and at home, evaluating them based on their quality, comfort, durability, temperature regulation, and value.

First, we inspected each blanket for any snags, loose threads, or discoloration. Running our hand over the fabric, we observed its texture, softness, and thickness. We then measured the blanket and laid it across our queen-sized bed, noting how nicely it draped and how well it covered the surface.

Next, we evaluated ease of cleaning. We stained each blanket, using black coffee for light-colored blankets and coffee with creamer for dark-colored blankets. After letting each stain absorb into the material for five minutes, we used a stain remover to eliminate it. Following the manufacturer’s care instructions, we then washed and dried each blanket, observing how well the stains came out of the material.

After laundering the blanket, we searched for any signs of wear and tear, including loose threads, tears, snags, puckering, discoloration, shrinkage, and uneven edges. We felt the material once again, noting whether the fabric endured any changes in texture post-wash. To test durability, we lightly glided a pet brush over the blanket, mimicking the effect of pet claws or other sharp objects. As we clawed the blanket, we observed whether the brush caused any snags or tears in the fabric.

To gather long-term insights, we brought the blankets home, evaluating their real-world performance after one month, three months, and six months of use.

How to Shop for Cooling Blankets Like a Pro

Type

Before buying a cooling blanket, consider where you want to use it. Are you looking for a blanket you can cozy up with on the couch or one you can sleep with every night? Our list includes all kinds of cooling blankets, like throws, duvet inserts, weighted blankets, and more.

Cooling throws, quilts, and bed blankets are often thin, lightweight, and breathable. Cooling comforters and duvet inserts, on the other hand, are heavier and more plush, but they’re typically made with cooling technology so they absorb and release heat. Cooling weighted blankets, like the Gravity Cooling Weighted Blanket, are much heavier than other cooling blankets (often 10 to 25 pounds). These options offer all the benefits of a traditional weighted blanket—they’re just made with cooling materials.

Materials

Many cooling blankets are made of natural materials, like cotton, linen, and rayon or lyocell from bamboo and eucalyptus. These materials are lightweight, breathable, and moisture wicking, but each has different pros and cons.

Cotton: Cotton is one of the most common materials found in sheets, thanks to its durability and versatility. Available in various weaves such as percale, sateen, and flannel, the material accommodates all sorts of sleep preferences. While it's breathable, it can feel heavy or trap heat when its weave is too dense.

Linen: Linen offers a lightweight, lived-in appeal. Thanks to its airy feel, it works great as a standalone summer blanket or an additional layer during the colder months. However, it does tend to wrinkle easily, so you may not like its appearance on your bed or couch.

Bamboo: Bamboo is known for its breathability, making it an especially popular choice for cooling blankets. Its production is also fairly sustainable, as bamboo regenerates quickly and requires little irrigation. Just keep in mind that bamboo is often pricier than cotton and is prone to shrinkage.

Eucalyptus: Like bamboo, eucalyptus is similarly breathable, moisture wicking, and cool to the touch. Despite its impressive cooling capabilities, it does tend to be tougher to clean.

Polyester: Unlike the aforementioned materials on our list, polyester is synthetic. According to Hurst, many polyester blends offer cooling attributes and cooling technologies that wick and absorb moisture, As a material, polyester is typically less breathable, and it lacks the sustainability of more natural materials.

Weave

Just as material is crucial to consider, Hurst explains that weave can also contribute to how warming or cooling a fabric is. When shopping for a blanket, you may come across percale, sateen, and flannel weaves. Generally speaking, a flannel weave tends to be warmer and cozier, while a sateen weave has a silkier finish. If you're a hot sleeper, Hurst suggests going with a percale weave, which is tighter, crisper, and offers impressive cooling qualities.

Temperature-Regulating Technologies

While some cooling blankets are made of breathable materials, others are made with cooling technology. These blankets are often made of synthetic materials, like polyester, nylon, and spandex.

Because temperature-regulating blankets are designed to absorb and release heat, they may keep you cooler than blankets made of lightweight materials. Look for blankets that use technologies like 37.5, Outlast, Arc-Chill, or Sorona, which absorb heat to keep your body at a comfortable temperature.

That said, Hurst warns that "cooling technology" is a buzzword in today's market, and that some of the technologies referenced cannot be tested or proven. If you're wary of whether a technology is reliable, opt for a tried-and-true cooling material.

Care

Many cooling blankets aren’t washer and dryer friendly, and if cleaned incorrectly, they may shrink or become less cooling. So if you'd rather not go to the dry cleaners, we suggest looking for a machine-washable blanket. You can also find a comforter or even a quilt that's compatible with a duvet cover (meaning it has built-in loops or ties) or comes with its own breathable cover. Duvet covers are much easier to wash than an entire blanket, and using one means you won't have to wash the insert as often.

Questions You Might Ask

How does a cooling blanket work?

Most cooling blankets are either made of cooling materials or with cooling technology. Blankets made of cooling materials (like cotton, bamboo, and eucalyptus) are breathable, so they promote airflow and wick away sweat to keep you cool.
Blankets made with cooling technology are designed to absorb and release heat, so they actively cool you down and regulate your body temperature as you sleep. "Typically, ultra-thin fibers are used that absorb and eliminate moisture, creating a soft and dry sleeping experience," Hurst says.

Should you choose a natural fiber or a lab-made fiber?

That depends—do you want a blanket that’s lightweight and breathable or one that actively cools you? If you want ample airflow, look for blankets made of natural materials, like cotton, linen, bamboo, or eucalyptus. In addition to their soft, cool-to-the-touch feel, Hurst says these materials are sustainable and recyclable.

Otherwise, find a blanket with temperature-regulating technology. These are often made of synthetic materials, like polyester, nylon, and spandex, but you can find options made of natural materials, too. According to Hurst, the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference—both natural and lab-made fibers can be durable and cooling.

Can a comforter or duvet insert be cooling?

Though comforters and duvet inserts are often heavier than standard blankets, they can still be cooling. Like blankets, some cooling comforters and duvets are made with breathable fabrics, like bamboo, linen, or eucalyptus, while others use temperature-regulating technology to control body temperature.

Also, you may think that a down comforter is too warm for hot sleepers, but it's actually a good temperature regulator. A lightweight or summer version should keep you comfortable when it's hot out.
