The days of printing out photos and assembling albums might be long behind us, but that doesn't mean images are any less valuable. To save both time and space, digital picture frames provide a convenient solution for displaying memories in the home.

"A digital photo frame cycles through a set number of photos (depending on its storage capacity), and allows the user to adjust settings like time between each photo, and transition effects," says Kevin Gordon, former VP of AI Technologies at NexOptic and co-founder of Velora Labs.

"Digital picture frames are extremely useful for photo enthusiasts who want to display many of their pictures, but don’t necessarily want to print out hard copies," he says. "A digital frame allows users to sync it with photos stored in the cloud, or even social media, and can display pictures in real-time."

To find the best digital picture frames, we tested 12 models in real-world conditions and evaluated them on setup, display, design, features, and value. We also spoke to Gordon for his expert insight into finding the best quality digital picture frame for your home.

What Stands Out
  • This frame is easy to set up, has unlimited cloud storage, and can display videos up to 30 seconds long.

What Could Be Improved
  • It can only be oriented horizontally.

Aura is known for its exceptional digital picture frames, and the Aura Mason earned our best overall award for its crisp display, affordable price, and unlimited cloud storage. During testing, we found this frame incredibly easy to set up, though you should note the frame needs to be connected to Wi-Fi to upload photos. This frame received high marks for its features, including unlimited cloud storage and a free app that makes photo management (and editing) easy. You can also invite unlimited contributors to upload their own photos to your account for a collaborative photo display.

The frame permits video uploads, so long as the videos are less than 30 seconds long—you can decide whether or not to play the videos with sound or silently so they're not disruptive, but you can turn on the audio via the app or the touch bar on the screen. The Carver also has several smart features that add to its ease of use: It can automatically turn your screen on and off to save power when you're away from home or asleep, and auto-crops photos for an ideal display.

What Stands Out
  • This frame has a traditional look that can blend with most decor styles.

What Could Be Improved
  • The resolution could be better.

If you don't need high resolution or unlimited storage, opt for this simple but efficient digital frame by Aeezo. It has 16GB of built-in storage that can hold up to 40,000 photos, which is plenty of space for most users. To add your photos, connect to Wi-Fi and upload them via an app—friends and family can upload to your account, too, and the frame will play a notification noise to let you know a new image has been added.

Once the images are uploaded, you can touch the screen directly to browse through photos, delete files, pause the slideshow display, or adjust brightness without using an app. The frame automatically fits photos to its orientation (it can be set vertically and horizontally) by shrinking the images rather than cropping them.

The 1280 x 800 resolution on the screen is good but not great—during testing, images on the frame had less clarity than on our phone. While this might be a drawback for some users, we still think it's a great option for adding to a gallery wall or bookshelf, as it looks better from a bit farther away. We also like that it allows you to upload videos, though it limits them to 15 seconds. For such an affordable option, we think this frame has solid features.

What Stands Out
  • This frame has a built-in camera and microphone for video calls.

What Could Be Improved
  • The frame can only be oriented in landscape mode.

When you think of a digital picture frame, you probably imagine a simple device that displays your favorite photos. But with the Echo Show 8, your digital frame does far more. Don't get us wrong, it's definitely more than capable as just a traditional digital picture frame—it has a high-definition display and unlimited cloud storage for Amazon Prime members. (Note: We tested the 2nd Gen version, but a newer 2023 model was recently released.)

But it also has a built-in camera and microphone to make and receive video calls. You can connect Alexa to the Echo Show 8, allowing you to access calendars, news updates, weather reports, and even Spotify streaming. And if that wasn't enough, this frame can stream your favorite shows via various apps. We only found a few areas for improvement: It can only orient in landscape mode, and the setup process is a little challenging, which might confuse less tech-savvy individuals.

What Stands Out
  • This smart option can also control lighting, set alarms, play music, stream movies, and more.

What Could Be Improved
  • Setup and use are more complicated.

If you have a smart home—or are planning to have one—the Google Nest Hub is the digital picture frame for you, as it can sync with other smart devices and function as an all-in-one, well, hub. Aside from displaying photos and videos, this device can control your lighting, set alarms, play music, stream movies and TV shows, edit your calendar, and much more. We particularly liked its ability to populate recipes, conveniently displaying them while we cooked.

The Nest Hub has one particularly unique feature: a sleep sensor that can track your rest throughout the night. Sleep Sensing prepares a daily report that tells you when you fall asleep, when you wake up, and how long you sleep. It can even measure your respiratory rate and snoring. For those who dislike wearable sleep trackers, this is a solid solution to improve your sleep habits. The main downside we noticed is that you can only use the Google Nest Hub horizontally, not vertically.

What Stands Out
  • This frame offers unlimited storage and has handy smart features.

What Could Be Improved
  • This is one of the most expensive options on our list.

This digital picture frame has it all, and because of its impressive features and design, it has a higher price tag to match. We love the hand-speckled finish and that you can orient the frame in portrait and landscape mode. The Aura Mason also excels in its ease of use—to get going, connect the Aura Mason to your Wi-Fi network, download the free Aura app, and begin uploading photos to the app for display on your digital frame. You can also invite family or friends to upload photos to your account. Plus, there are no fees associated with the app or uploading photos—and you get unlimited cloud storage. Due to cloud storage, however, the device must stay connected to Wi-Fi to display images.

The frame also impresses with its tech specs. It has a solid 1600 x 1200 resolution for crisp images, and the screen auto dims to correspond to ambient light and turns off at night. The screen can also display 30-second videos with audio and has a touch bar to swipe through photos and view additional details. While undoubtedly a high-quality option, the price point might be too high for those looking for a more budget-friendly option.

What it is missing, however, is the ability to be wall-mounted—and a touchscreen. But, as we found during testing, digital frames with touchscreens are prone to greasy fingerprints, so perhaps it's better to have a touch bar like the Aura Mason does. Due to all these features, we think this frame is the best option for gifting.

Final Verdict

Overall, we recommend the Aura Carver as the best digital picture frame. This elegant frame comes with unlimited cloud storage, meaning you can upload as many photos and 30-second videos as you desire. Everything is conveniently handled through the connected app, and you can adjust the display via a touch bar on the device. For those wanting a budget option, opt for the Aeezo 10.1 Inch Wi-Fi Digital Photo Frame, which has a stylish frame and easy-to-use touchscreen.

Our Testing Process

To find the best digital picture frames, we rounded up 12 models and tested them in real-world conditions. To start, we timed how long it took to set up the frame and upload photos, analyzing the ease of the entire process. If available, we also tested how simple it was for multiple users to upload photos. Then, we rated each frame on its aesthetics and display options, such as display orientation, wall-mounting, and power cord.

Next, we tested the physical displays, noting clarity, brightness, and color. For digital picture frames that are video compatible, we tested playback capabilities, uploading videos of different sizes to the device and rating their playback. As part of video testing, we assessed the audio capabilities of the frame. For smart frames with additional features, we tested each feature, including clocks, calendars, streaming services, and video calls.

Finally, we determined the value of the digital picture frames, evaluating the appropriateness of the listed price.

How to Shop for Digital Picture Frames Like a Pro

Size

Though your frame can scale high-resolution digital photos up and down in size, you have to consider what dimensions suit your space. Consider the spot you want to place it—a small frame is suitable for a nightstand or gallery wall, while a large one complements a mantle or bookshelf. There's no right or wrong size, so it comes to personal preference—most users opt for diagonal sizes ranging from eight to 11 inches.

Storage

Some digital picture frames use a memory card for storage, while others utilize cloud storage. Regardless of storage type, there is usually an upper limit unless you pay for more space. Think about how many photos you want to display and ensure that number aligns with the storage options.

Also, consider how you upload your images. You can upload images to the cloud via email or a manual online uploader. But if you use a memory card, you'll have to transfer images from your camera to that card (usually via a computer).

If you'd like to give family and friends the ability to upload photos to your frame, prioritize finding a frame with cloud storage. "A digital photo frame is great for family members to share photos to it," says Gordon. "Certain apps have basic 'social' functions so that the family can comment on the pictures."

Display

There are several factors to consider regarding display. First, can the frame be oriented vertically and horizontally, or in just one direction? Digital picture frames can display vertical and horizontal photos in their opposite configuration but contend with pillar boxing (when black bars are added to the edges of photos to appropriately fit the screen without warping).

Second, and on a similar note, consider aspect ratio or overall dimensions. Most photos taken on phones fit into a 4:3 aspect ratio, though other popular options include 5:4 and 16:9. If your photos don't match up to your frame, pillar boxing might occur here, too.

And third is the resolution, or how detailed the screen is. Larger screens need a higher resolution for crisp images, while smaller screens can get away with a lower resolution and still maintain crisp images. At the minimum, look for 1080p resolution.

Luckily, the image quality of digital picture frames is getting better. "It’s definitely improving to the point where I think the photos are done justice (not like the early days of pixelated pictures)," Gordon says.

Customization

Your photo display settings should come with several customizations, but the specifics change per device. "A digital photo frame cycles through a set number of photos, depending on its storage capacity, and allows the user to adjust settings like the time between each photo and transition effects," says Gordon. If you want specific display settings, make sure you can customize them.

More Digital Picture Frames to Consider

Nixplay 9.7 inch Smart Digital Photo Frame: This frame offers high-resolution display, unlimited cloud storage, and bonus features like video capabilities, motion activation, and auto adjustments to best fit each photo to the frame. But setup was a touch difficult, and the price is very high.

Pix-Star 10 inch Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame: With a high-quality display, free unlimited cloud storage, and easy set-up, we enjoyed the main features of this digital picture frame. We also like that you can manage up to 25 frames with one account. However, the orientation is horizontal only, and the frame cannot be mounted on a wall. We also discovered that the web radio functionality was limited.

Questions You Might Ask

Can digital picture frames work without Wi-Fi?

Most digital picture frames require Wi-Fi, as the images are in a cloud service. But there are also non-Wi-Fi digital picture frames that store photos on memory cards or USBs, which don't necessarily need Wi-Fi to operate.

Can digital picture frames play videos?

Many digital picture frames play video but may limit the length of those videos from 15 seconds to two minutes. If videos are important to you, check that the digital picture frame you purchase supports them. Some frames allow audio functions, while others are silent.

Do digital picture frames come with privacy features?

Most digital picture frame companies have privacy protections in place, but their depth of coverage varies greatly. "Certain companies that make digital photo frames do implement privacy features into their devices," explains Gordon. "For example, Nixplay is a reputable digital photo frame producer that encrypts your photos during transfers. And there are others, like Aura, that give you the choice to delete metadata on your photos, such as when and where it was taken. Users should look for these privacy features in the terms and conditions outlined by companies before using their devices. If in doubt, avoid the device."

If your digital picture frame runs on Wi-Fi, there is always a chance that someone can hack it. "Even if you don’t care that hackers have access to your photos, the frame itself could be used as a gateway to your phone or computer, giving malicious actors access to more personal information," says Gordon. "I often think about how every device on my network increases the attack surface area, and network-connected digital photo frames are no exception."
