Costco and Whole Foods Recall Popular Brands of Broth for Possible Contamination

Here’s how to tell if your product is part of the recall.

Bone broth is known for its rich flavor and versatility when cooking fall favorites like soups and stews. But it’s time to check your pantry because two popular stores are announcing major recalls. Costco and Whole Foods are recalling broths and bone broths manufactured by Tree House Foods for possible microbial contamination.

Costco is recalling Culinary Treasures Organic Chicken Bone Broth that was sold over the past year between September 8, 2022, and September 22, 2023, while Whole Foods is recalling three of its 365 brand organic chicken broth varieties sold between July 24, 2022, and September 21, 2023.

“The product may have the potential for non-pathogenic microbial contamination, which may result in product bloating, shortened shelf-life, and potential for early spoilage,” according to a recall letter sent to Costco members and shoppers.

If you have Costco’s Culinary Treasures Organic Chicken Bone Broth in your possession, here’s what to look for to see if it is a part of the recall:

  • Lot Code: 98E08242
  • Best Before Date: 2/23/2024

If you have Whole Foods 365 Brand chicken or beef broths in your pantry, here’s what to look for on the packaging to know if it’s part of the recall:

  • Best Before Dates: 1/31/2024 and 9/15/2024

So far, no illnesses have been reported, but Costco and Whole Foods are urging shoppers to discard the product immediately if it’s still in their pantry or cupboard. You can also return it to any Costco location for a full refund.
