The Quaker Oats Company is recalling dozens of additional products due to salmonella concerns, just weeks after the Chicago-based brand recalled more than 40 of its popular granola and cereal items for the same reason. According to an updated announcement from the United States Food & Drug Administration, the recall now includes more than 40 additional cereals, bars and snacks.

The newly recalled products include Cap'n Crunch Treats Crunch Berries Cereal Bars, Strawberry Quaker Chewy Granola Breakfast Cereal, and Cap’n Crunch Instant Oatmeal. All of them are sold at retailers such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Publix throughout the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan. For a complete list of the newly recalled items, click here

The FDA is encouraging consumers to check their pantries for any of the recalled products and dispose of them immediately. Additionally, shoppers with any now-recalled items can contact Quaker Consumer Relations (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, Mon.-Fri.) at 1-800-492-9322, or visit www.QuakerRecallUSA.com for additional information or product reimbursement.

If you’re unsure about whether or not you have any recalled Quaker Oats products, you can find a combined list of everything that has been recalled, here.

As the FDA notes, salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Side effects for those infected with salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
