When you think of pressure washing, you may picture industrial hoses cleaning large outdoor areas like gutters and roofs. Pressure washing, or power washing, is a cleaning method that uses high-pressure water spray to remove dirt and debris from surfaces and objects.

“Power washing revives dull and dirty surfaces by blasting away built-up grime and debris,” says Kevin McLaughlin, home improvement specialist and owner of Heritage Exteriors LLC. However, pressure washing is also a powerful cleaning tool for many household items! Here, pressure washing experts offer insights on some surprising items you can pressure wash for sparkling clean results.

Outdoor furniture is an often overlooked area, and you can use a pressure wash to remove stains, dirt, and grime. Before you wash, adjust the settings to suit your furniture materials, lowering the pressure as needed.

“A quick pressure wash can breathe life into aging outside furniture, getting rid of accumulated dirt and mildew from the most stubborn surfaces,” says Brian Davis, cleaning expert and CEO at Handy Rubbish.

Playground Equipment

Playground equipment is a prime candidate for power washing. Children’s outdoor equipment often gets stained, dirty, and weathered by the elements. A thorough pressure washing can transform a playground.

“Last month, we pressure washed an old wooden playset for a local school,” McLaughlin said. “Years of dirt and mildew had accumulated, but after a thorough cleaning with our high-powered hoses, the structure looked brand new."

Trash Bins

Pressure washing can also transform trash containers, dumpsters, and waste areas, cleaning some of the toughest remnants of trash and debris. Power washing your trash bins and area also helps keep conditions sanitary.

“We regularly pressure wash commercial trash enclosures and dumpsters,” McLaughlin says. “Businesses don’t always realize how much of an impact a clean waste area can have, but once we blast away stuck-on grease, food waste, and accumulated grime, their dumpster area ends up looking spotless.”

Pressure washing isn’t just for decks. A good spray can refresh your outdoor walkways, patios, and driveway

“Brick walkways, stone patios, and concrete driveways are often overlooked for power washing, but a deep clean can make weathered and dirty hardscapes look as good as new,” McLaughlin says. “Power washing provides an inexpensive facelift.”

Sports Equipment

Sports gear is another surprising thing you can pressure wash. Adjust the wash settings to a lower pressure to suit the equipment you’re cleaning.

“Washing sports gear like bicycles, hockey gear, or golf clubs using high-pressure removes dirt, keeping them in good condition for longer,” Davis says. “For delicate equipment such as golf clubs, it may be appropriate to lower the pressure on the machine and use a fan nozzle, which will avoid causing any harm to the golfing tool.”

You can even power wash your mailbox for an updated, refreshed look. Using a high-pressure hose on your mailbox can remove dirt and built-up grime to reveal a more polished appearance.

“Pressure washing a mailbox can be quite effective in restoring its appearance,” McLaughlin says. “Mailboxes are often made of metal or plastic, so using a lower pressure setting is important to avoid damage.”
