The Perfect White Tank Top Does Exist—and I Found It for $6 at Target

A good tank top can be hard to find, even if you shop for a living like I do. You don’t want one that’s too long, but you might not be looking for a cropped style either. Then, there’s the fit. You may be trying to avoid something tight and unbreathable in the summer heat, but perhaps oversized isn’t your vibe either. Enter: Target’s A New Day Slim Fit Tank Top. 

As a shopping writer, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect basics. My summer style can be summed up as minimalist and lightweight since I live in the heat of Atlanta, Georgia. Most of the time, you can find me in colorful linen shorts, pants, or a skirt paired with a simple white tank top. Since it’s a summer wardrobe staple for me, I’m particularly picky, but this $6 Target one is so good, I’ve gone back and grabbed it in black to add to my wardrobe.

A versatile tank top is a must for me. Typically, I’ve got a small army of them folded (or crumpled depending on how dedicated I am to organization that week) in my dresser, and I wear them throughout the year. In fall and winter, they make great layers under cardigans and sweaters, and in spring and summer, I wear them solo with my bottoms of choice. The A New Day tank can do all of that because of its breathable material. 

It’s made of a stretchy knit that’s thick enough to avoid being sheer but is still lightweight. There’s also plenty of stretch. Typically, I’d opt for a 2X in the style, but for summer, I wanted a white tank top that was fitted and able to be tucked in without weird bunching happening, so I sized down, and it fits perfectly.

In addition to the breathable material, the top is also my ideal length. At 5’8, it lands at the top of my hips. If I wear it tucked in, the stretch material helps it stay in place, but when it’s worn untucked, it’s easy to scrunch for a shorter look. Plus, the scoop neck is flattering, and the straps are wide enough to be worn with a traditional bra without them peeking through. 

I’m not alone in my adoration of the top, either. One reviewer raved about how “soft, comfortable, and lightweight” it is.
