What Is Wheat Germ Oil?

Wheat germ oil (triticum vulgare) is a plant-based oil that’s extracted from wheat kernels. It’s an excellent source of nutrients, including antioxidant-rich vitamin E, omega fatty acids, and other essential nutrients.

“For cosmetic-grade usage, the wheat is collected and cleaned and the germ (the reproductive part of the plant) is separated through milling,” explains licensed esthetician Erica Choi, founder of Superegg. “The oil is then extracted either by gently pressing it or using solvents.”

The cold pressing method is considered a superior option since it keeps the oil natural. Sometimes wheat germ oil is refined so it’s cleaner, and then the final product is carefully packaged to keep it fresh. You can find 100% pure wheat germ oil, which is great for DIY beauty projects or simply for straight up application, or you can purchase products formulated with wheat germ oil alongside other ingredients.

Wheat Germ Oil Benefits

Wheat germ oil promises all sorts of benefits. Here are some of the top reasons why it’s worth adding to your beauty routine.

  1. Moisturizes: Wheat germ oil is most prized for its moisturizing properties. Choi says, “It helps hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it softer and smoother.” It works this moisturizing magic for both skin and hair.
  2. Supports Skin Health: In addition to offering skin some soothing moisture, wheat germ oil can improve overall skin health. The omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids help provide an occlusive layer over the skin. This keeps the elements out and moisture in.
  3. Soothes: The oil also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce redness and irritation for a soothing experience.
  4. Protects: “It’s also rich in vitamin E, which is known for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the body's cells from damage caused by free radicals, helping to reduce signs of aging,” says Choi. “It also plays a role in promoting skin regeneration.”

How to Use Wheat Germ Oil

Good news! Adding wheat germ oil to your skincare routine or hair care regimen is super easy. Choi notes it’s particularly ideal for those with dry skin or hair, and suggests that those with oily or acne-prone skin use it with caution. Either way, it’s smart to complete a patch test prior to usage.

Using Wheat Germ Oil for Skin

“You can apply wheat germ oil topically as a first-step oil cleanser in your routine, mix it into your moisturizer, or apply it on top of your skincare as a final step in your routine,” suggests Jeannette Graf, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Choi adds that you can also use it as a spot treatment for scars or blemishes by applying it directly to the affected areas, or you can massage a tiny amount onto cuticles for healthy nails.

Using Wheat Germ Oil for Hair

Wheat germ oil is a multi-use ingredient when it comes to your hair, as well. It’s an excellent pre-wash treatment for those who enjoy hair oiling, and you can also use a tiny amount to smooth flyaways, seal the cuticle, and add a bit of luster from the mid-shaft to ends.

If you have a dry or irritated scalp, you can even apply a tiny amount directly onto your scalp. massage it in, let it set for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then rinse out with warm water and gentle shampoo.

Ingesting Wheat Germ Oil

Wheat germ oil is also edible, though Dr. Graf notes you should never heat it since this reduces its benefits. “You can also ingest it orally by using it on cold foods or adding it to things like smoothies,” she suggests. She notes that there are some claims and research saying it may help with cholesterol level, improve muscle strength, and help with energy.
